The Asian Games are the largest multi-sport event in Asia and the second biggest sporting event in the world after the Olympics. Athletes from countries across Asia compete in a variety of sports every four years. The upcoming 2026 Asian Games will be held in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October 2026, with athletes competing in more than 40 sports disciplines.
The history of the Asian Games dates back to 1951, when the first edition was organised in New Delhi, India with participation from 11 countries and six sports. The event was created to promote friendship, unity and sporting excellence among Asian nations after World War II. Over the decades, the Games have expanded greatly, now involving dozens of countries and hundreds of sporting events. The competition is organized by the Olympic Council of Asia and is considered one of the most prestigious sporting events on the continent.
India has played an important role in the history of the Asian Games. It hosted the first Asian Games in 1951 and again in 1982. Indian athletes have consistently performed well and have won medals in athletics, shooting, wrestling, boxing, badminton, and kabaddi. India achieved a historic performance in the 2023 Asian Games, winning 107 medals (28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze), the country’s best performance in the event’s history.
Looking ahead to the 2026 Asian Games, India has strong prospects of winning medals in several disciplines. Athletics, shooting, wrestling, boxing, badminton, archery and cricket are expected to be major medal-winning sports for the country. With improved sports infrastructure, government support and talent development programs, Indian athletes are becoming more competitive at the international level. Reports also suggest that India may send over 700 athletes, its largest contingent ever, to the Games.
In conclusion, the Asian Games 2026 will be an important opportunity for India to showcase its sporting talent. With growing experience and preparation, Indian athletes are expected to win many medals and strengthen the country’s position as one of Asia’s leading sporting nations.
